Top 5 Reasons Smokers Smoke & Vapers Vape

We love vaping

Do you ever wonder what it is about smoking that people like so much? The truth is that for most people, it’s not actually the smoking itself – it’s the other aspects of smoking culture that provides the most enjoyment. And it’s no different with vaping. Electronic cigarettes provide you with a great alternative to smoking, without all those harmful chemicals that come with traditional smoking.

Let’s take a look at the top 5 reasons smokers smoke and vapers vape.

  • The routine: People tend to follow a fairly normal routine. And we all love something to look forward to. Vapers enjoy knowing that when they wake up in the morning they can enjoy a vape or two with their morning coffee or a vaping session once they get home from a long day at work. Some say it’s like a small reward.
  • The habit: Some people become addicted to the habits of vaping. They enjoy the throat hit of the first inhalation, the visual of the vapor as they exhale, and even the simple “hand-to-mouth” motion of vaping.
  • The flavours: One huge advantage ecigs have over traditional cigarettes is the variety of flavours you can choose. From sweet candies to tropical drink flavours, and from fruity blends to minty freshness, there is no shortage of ejuice flavours!
  • Relaxation: Vapers (and smokers) come to depend on the relaxing feeling that waves over them when they vape. Why? It’s the deep breathing first and foremost. It’s also the act of getting away from the stress to “have a smoke.” By physically removing yourself from a stressful situation and finding a quiet place to breath deeply for 5 or 10 minutes, you can just feel the anxiety melt away.
  • The culture: For some, vaping is about being part of a community and emerging themselves in a culture. These people (like us!) love to chat about vaping rituals, different ecig styles, and all the latest flavours. We also love to debate the controversy and cultural aspects of the vaping community.

Everyone vapes for their own personal reasons. So tell us, what is it about vaping that you love so much?

Innovative Vaping Apparel for Ladies and Gents

Elvis “Papi” Edwards wanted to celebrate the “responsible use of legal marijuana, nicotine, and vapor-based accessories” through his VapRwear hoodies for men and women. He admitted his hoodie design was inspired by Sean Oliver’s pipe sweatshirt, which he saw in Denver in 2014. While Oliver thought of making cannabis use more discreet for his customers, Edwards took a step further and made the hoodie vape-ready for nicotine lovers.

“I invented the [vape sweatshirt] on 4/20 in Denver last year,” Edwards told BuzzFeed News. “I saw Sean and his partner, I knew their hoodies, and I knew how to make them better.”

According to Oliver, he also thought of making sweatshirts for vapers, but decided to develop the pipe one first because it cost less to manufacture. Unfortunately for him, Edwards beat him to it and found more people willing to pay a hundred bucks (more or less) for a hoodie that can accommodate liquid nicotine users as well as those who use dry herbs, oils, flowers and waxes. Now, VapRwear sells different types of hooded apparel along with their proprietary D-LO3 multi-vape system.

How VapRwear Looks with a Hoodie

Built within the lining of the hoodie, the patented D-LO3(Dee Lo 3) system is the brainchild of the VapRwear line. The hood has private pockets for the slim built-in D-LO3 vapor device, this one-of-a-kind clothing line is gaining attention not just nationally but on a global platform.

Oliver has a similar idea with his pipe hoodie, but the handblown glass blown at one end of the fire-resistant tube doesn’t look useful for vapers who use e-juices and oils. Plus, it seems less convenient for users to continue holding up the bowl as they relax and enjoy some weed.

In comparison, Edwards designed his product to be appealing to all types of vapers. According to the device’s product information on the VapRwear website:

The patented DLo3 vape system is available without purchase of a hoodie. The vaporizer has been engineered to accommodate your favorite e-juice, oil blend, wax, or dry herb. Each DLo3 vape system features a hoodlace tank, two battery sticks, and a USB charging port.

The older version is a built-in vape pen for all VapRwear apparel. It can only accommodate e-juice and oil users. The kit features a hoodlace tank, one battery stick, and a USB charging port. In case the hose becomes worn down or was accidentally damaged, users can get a replacement hose for either DLo1 or DLo3.

One of the most common questions about the product is on washing and cleaning the hoodie and the vape pen. It’s actually a simple process. The hardware is removable and the clothes are machine-washable. In addition, the DLo3 comes with a small brush for easy cleaning of the tube.

Underage Vaping: Why Vaping is Not Necessarily A Gateway to Smoking

underage vapingThose who oppose vaping and see it as a threat to teens commonly cite that ecigarette companies market to children by offering ejuice flavours that appeal to young people. But think about this – how different are the flavours for ecigarettes from those offered by liquor companies?

Alcohol is available in hundreds of different flavours that could conceivably be appealing to children. Just because ecigarette companies offer appealing flavours does not mean they are marketed to kids, or that we are enticing them to try vaping. Adults enjoy having a variety of ejuice flavours to choose from. Being able to vary the vaping experience is part of what makes it so great.

No matter which side of the debate you’re on, our stance on underage vaping is clear:

If you are younger than legal smoking age in your area, then you should not be vaping, and we don’t want your business.

Ecigarettes are for adults. However, much like alcohol, cigarettes, and anything else that young people find interesting, they can and will get their hands on it if they want to. This is the nature of youth society. This also means that vaping companies, parents and fellow vapers have the responsibility to educate children and work collaboratively to prevent underage vaping.

Vaping Is Not a Gateway to Smoking

Many people assume that vaping is a gateway to smoking. However, a recent study found this not to be the case:

  • Researchers surveyed 1,300 college students
  • 43 students said their first nicotine product was an ecigarette
  • Only one person of the 43 went on to smoke cigarettes regularly
  • The overwhelming majority who started with ecigs are not currently using any nicotine or tobacco product

Only 43 of 1,300 chose to try ecigs over traditional cigarettes as their first nicotine experience, and only one smokes cigarettes regularly – hardly a gateway to smoking. But the important thing to note is that youth are still vaping underage, and this needs to be addressed.

What Can We Do to Prevent Underage Vaping?

  • Educate children about the risks
  • Make it clear to kids that vaping is for adults only
  • Keep ecigs out of reach of children
  • Avoid vaping around kids and teens – they tend to mimic the habits of their parents

From an industry perspective, ecig companies need to work together to ensure underage kids cannot get their hands on ecigarettes. This will help us take the next step towards mainstream legitimization. All it takes is for one company or store owner to get caught selling ecigs to teens to give our entire industry a bad name. So we at Vapor Jedi want to be clear again:

Vaping is for adults only. We will not serve anyone under the legal smoking age in their area.

Do you have kids at home? What steps do you think we should take to keep ecigs out of the hands of teens and prevent use?

What are Mechanical Mods?

Mechanical mods are vaping equipment that don’t rely on modern electronics to work. They don’t have a digital meter that tells you how hot your atomizer is and how much power you have left. You have to figure it all out by your self as you press the button.

A mechanical mod has a simple internal system.

One advantage of these mods is the flexibility to use different kinds of batteries.

With a telescopic mechanical, one simply rotates the outer tube counterclockwise as if unscrewing it from the inner tube in order to increase the overall length of the mod; conversely, one would rotate the outer tube clockwise to shorten the mod’s overall length. In this way, the mod can accommodate batteries from 18350 to 18650.

The ruggedness and stamina of these mods trump those of vape pens and cig-alikes. Box mods won’t break easily when they fall off a table, or get hit by a strong jarring movement. These mods can be used until their batteries have been depleted.

This also means you’re forced to invest on an extra pair of batteries in case the first two ran out of power. Depleting your batteries is not good vaping practice, but this flexibility in battery usage gives you the chance to enjoy your vapes until there’s no more juice left in your cartomizer.

They’re the kind of ‘old school’ vaping tools that present multiple challenges to the user. These challenges include the lack of advanced features that most regulated mods provide out of the box. Because these mods are not regulated, the quality of hits they deliver are inconsistent. Sometimes, you get aerosol that produces thin vapor, and sometimes, you suck in burning hot air into your throat and lungs.

Obviously, mechanical mods are geared towards builders – vapers who love to create custom-built atomizers and tweak the mod’s internal operations. To avoid hits with a burnt wick taste, you’re encouraged to tweak and customize your mod until it performs the way you wanted it to. In general, mechanical mods offer a more satisfying vaping life for you than when you’re using disposable vape pens and cig-alikes.

Here are some basic battery safety tips from Olympia Vapor Works for users of mechanical mods:

  • Use ONLY high-end IRC or IMR batteries.
  • Always buy your batteries from a reputable vendor.
  • Make sure your mechanical mod is properly vented. Check whether there are air holes in the tube.
  • Take good care of your batteries. If they get dented or the plastic cover came off, then it’s time to throw them away.
  • Buy a multimeter and regularly check your batteries with it. When they get down to around 3.5V, replace them with fully charged ones.
  • Buy an extra pair of batteries, even when your mod allows only two in the compartment.
  • Don’t buy a cheap charger or a universal charger that’s normally used for cellphones.
  • Use chargers specifically made by the e-cig manufacturer for their products.

How to Clean Your Ecigarette

They say cleanliness is next to Godliness, and your ecigarette is no exception to that rule. Your first clue that it’s time to clean your ecig will probably be one or more of  these  ecigarette issues.

  • Is your ecig  producing less vapor than normal?
  • Do you notice a different or odd taste?
  • Is your ecigarette more difficult to draw on than it used to be?

ecig cleanerIf you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are good it’s time to clean your ecig and its parts. Here’s how:

Unscrew your ecigarette atomizer and blow into its tapered end, catching any liquid with a tissue or a paper towel. Do this several times until no liquid escapes and you hear free-flowing air instead of a gurgling clogged sound.

Then, using a tightly wrapped Q-tip or paper towel twist, gently swab the inside of the atomizer with rubbing alcohol until the dark residue is gone. Flush the atomizer under the hottest water available followed by a dry wipe with a clean tip or towel.

You also need to clean your battery contact and your ecigarette charger (unplugged, of course!) using the same Q-tip and alcohol method described above (no hot water rinse this time).

Let everything air-dry thoroughly before plugging in your charger and re-connecting your battery. Overnight is best, but if you’re in a hurry, a hairdryer will do the trick.

Ecigarettes are easier to clean if you don’t allow them to get cluttered with ejuice in the first place. So after using about 30 ml. of ejuice, give your ecigarette a thorough cleaning to ensure peak performance. If you’re switching flavors in the same e-cig, give it a quick clean-up to avoid flavor contamination – or not…  strawberry/banana, chocolate/caramel, apple/cinnamon, yum!

Of course, these aren’t the only apps out there. There are more you can check out from either iTunes or Google Play. Find the app that works perfectly for you.

Vaping Etiquette: Where & When Is It Socially Acceptable?

vaping etiquetteVaping in public is a hot topic in many communities. There is a lot of debate about whether ecigarettes in Canada should be treated similar to smoking or if it should have its own set of bylaws.

While many city councils debate electronic cigarette health risks and how to address ecigarette use in public, vapers are stuck in a weird social and political limbo.

No one is really sure where and when it is okay to vape. Is it okay to vape indoors? Are ecigs safe to use in public? Should they follow similar protocols to smoking? Should there be a new set of rules for vaping?

It can tough for newbies, and even for experienced vapers, to fully understand the rules around what’s socially acceptable. What is the proper vaping etiquette? Although there is no concrete set of rules, common sense should always prevail.

To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of vaping etiquette best practices to keep top of mind:

  • Ask before vaping indoors: Whether you are at a friend’s house, at the office, or at a restaurant, always ask before vaping. Establishments have different rules and viewpoints about vaping in public. Never assume it’s okay to vape.
  • Don’t try to force vaping on others: We know you love vaping, but this doesn’t mean you should try to push it on everyone you know.  Would you want someone else imposing their hobby on you? Probably not.
  • Don’t use other people’s ecigs without asking: Whether you are new to vaping or curious about trying ecigarettes, it’s important to understand that vaping is a very personal thing. Always ask before using someone else’s ecig.
  • Keep your vapor clouds to yourself: Even fellow vapers can find it annoying when you blow a huge vapor cloud in their direction. Keep the vapor smoke tricks to yourself.
  • Avoid vaping around children, if possible: Even though ecigarette side effects are minimal, it’s a good practice to avoid vaping when children are present, especially if they are not your children. Go outside or into another room.
  • Use common sense when vaping in public: At the end of the day, vaping etiquette really comes down to using your common sense. Be respectful of people’s personal space, ask if you are unsure, and respect other’s wishes.

Vaping etiquette is about respecting those around you. With all the recent talk about changing Canadian ecigarette bylaws, it is up to vapers to set a good example. Don’t be a jerk about vaping in public. Even if you’re outside, be conscious of where you are blowing your vapor cloud. Make the effort to respect non-vapers. The last thing you want to do is give vapers a bad reputation!

You Won’t Believe What Vintage Cigarettes Ads Used to Say to People

Cigarettes haven’t always been the vilified cancer-causing agents that they are. People used to think of them as therapeutic products that could relieve health problems, such as hay fever and influenza, prevent indigestion, and offer respite from sore throat and coughing. (If you don’t believe me, you can check out the preposterous claims of these vintage ads for famous cigarette brands here and here.)

Cigares de Joy (Joy’s Cigarettes), in particular, promoted itself as a common remedy for asthma and bronchitis. That’s because the cigarettes contained Jimson weed (Datura stramonium), which was a well-known indigenous remedy for respiratory problems as well as a mild hallucinogenic.

But, the last 50 years have not been good for tobacco. People have now realized how truly bad cigarettes are to their health. In response to this, many smokers have switched to vaping as a nicotine delivery system. So, is vaping as dangerous as cigarette smoking? Actually, the answer is a strong NO.

For starters, vapes deliver nicotine without the carcinogenic compounds found in tobacco smoke. Another thing is that nicotine has been found to have some healing properties. Yes, you read that right. Nicotine has healing properties as mentioned by this paper, which cross-references another paper:

Nicotine has been shown to have angiogenic and wound healing properties potentially suggestive of useful therapeutic indications within the oral cavity, including the management of osteonecrosis and post-surgery healing, especially when using free-flaps.

However, nicotine’s effects on human cells ravaged by cancer can go either way. Moderation leads to improvements, but using too much of it and for much longer than recommended can aggravate the cancer’s progression and hasten its growth.
